Germany proving popular for weekend breaks
19 April 2006
Germany is an increasingly popular destination for weekend breaks, according to figures from the German National Tourist Board (GNTB).
'If we look at the travel figures, Germany saw a seven per cent increase in 2005, which was significantly above the figures recorded by our European neighbours and higher than the global trend of 5.5 per cent growth,' said Petra Hedorfer, chief executive officer of the GNTB.
City breaks from European visitors were up 15 per cent during 2005, as increasing numbers of low-cost deals came on offer.
Hannover saw a 27 per cent rise in overnight stays during the period with Berlin posting a 19 per cent improvement, up by 800,000.
Over five per cent more UK travellers chose Germany as their city break destination last year than in 2004 and large numbers of Irish arrived with 20 per cent more visiting the country in 2005 than the year before.
Last year's buoyant visitor figures are likely to be swamped by the statistics from this summer, when the World Cup is played out throughout the country.
