Manchester in Reykjavik
20 April 2006

Some of Manchester's best bands will be heading to Iceland on 6 May.

Badly Drawn Boy, Elbow and Echo And The Bunnymen will all be taking the stage in the Icelandic capital for Madchester a night of music from Manchester and Iceland at one the country's biggest music venues, Laugardalshollin.

The evening is being organised to strengthen cultural links between the north-west of England and Iceland as Icelandair starts twice weekly flights from Manchester to Reykjavik.

Over the last decade the reputation of Reykjavik as cool destination has grown, in part due to musical exports such as Bjork and Sigur Ros bringing the world's attention to the country.

Music lovers from around Europe also head to Iceland for the annual Iceland Airwaves festival in October, when venues across Reykjavik come together to host some of the world's best new music.

So far this year Kaiser Chiefs and Wolf Parade have been confirmed and previous years' line-ups have included Babyshambles, the Zutons, The Flaming Lips and Fatboy Slim.
