Midnight movies in the sun
21 April 2006

Visitors to the Finnish town of Sodankyla can fill the sun-filled nights with movies.

During the summer when the sun shines throughout the night within the Arctic Circle the Midnight Sun Film Festival takes place - this year celebrating its 20th anniversary.

At a series of venues across the town - including a circus tent - films from Finland and around the world are shown at the festival that runs from 14 to 18 June.

The festival attracts a relaxed international crowd of film fans with young directors and world famous stars coming to take part.

Notable guests over the last 20 years have included Francis Ford Coppola, Terry Gilliam, Agnieszka Holland and Krzysztof Kieslowski.

Around 30 films are shown during the festival and 20,000 people make the journey north to the small town of Sodankyla changing its character completely for the duration of the festival.
