Scottish airports fly high
21 April 2006
Scottish airports have been welcoming more passengers than ever.
Figures from airport operator BAA Scotland show 20.3 million passengers used Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports in 2005 - an increase of 4.7 per cent.
The rise has been put down to increased investment in the nation's airports and more destinations becoming available.
BAA Scotland invested £46 million upgrading its three airports, including a £11 million new air traffic control tower in Edinburgh and new departure facilities in Aberdeen.
The airport operator's route development fund provided direct support that brought about 27 new services including flights to Pakistan, Egypt, Switzerland, Spain and Norway.
The most popular international destinations were Amsterdam, Dublin and Parma.
The fastest growing destination was Poland with new flights to Warsaw, Gdansk and Katowice.
Stephen Baxter, managing director of BAA Scotland, said: 'This has been a year of rising passenger numbers, matched by rising investment in our airports.
'With passenger demand at an all time high, and set to grow further, BAA Scotland is working hard to deliver a world class transport infrastructure for Scotland.'
