Cost of flying falls
21 April 2006

The fall in UK inflation has been partly put down to a reduction in the cost of air travel.

Official inflation data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show in March inflation fell by 0.2 per cent to 1.8 per cent.

Along with food, a major cause for the decrease in inflation was the falling cost of transport.

Airfares fell in price for the third month in a row falling in March by 1.8 per cent -when for the same period last year they were rising, especially for domestic and European destinations.

The ONS notes that airfares usually rise in April although the trend was bucked last year.

No changes in prices were noted for package holidays, but the costs of late booked foreign holidays rose over the year, but by less than a year ago.

The cost of hotels and restaurants was also calculated.

The figures show that over the year there was a small rise in the cost of eating out and hotel accommodation and in March prices rose by just 0.3 per cent.
