Canada and UK in air link up
25 April 2006

Airfares to Canada are set to fall following the signing of a new agreement.

The Open Skies agreement signed by the Canadian and British governments removes restrictions on airlines so they may fly more freely between the nations and to and from third party countries.

It is estimated that two million passengers fly between the two countries each year and it is hoped the agreement will bring cheaper flights.

Canadian Airports Council chief executive Jim Facette said: 'Open Skies agreements such as the one announced Friday result in increased air service, which lowers costs and enables Canadian communities to participate more fully in the global economy.'

It is also hoped that the agreement will bring greater numbers of visitors to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Duncan Dee of Air Canada said: 'This new agreement opens up a realm of new opportunities that will benefit air travellers.

'Most notably, it will allow us to continue expanding Air Canada's simplified fare products for customers between Canada and the United Kingdom, our largest international market.'
