Young turn off flying
26 April 2006

Young people are increasingly less likely to travel

New research presented at the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Annual Conference showed young people - dubbed Generation Y - prefer to stay at home and invest in electrical equipment than travel.

Dr Clint Laurent, chief executive of research firm Asian Demographics, explained that in China and Japan the baby boomer generation and members of Generation X in their 30s were more likely to travel.

Other representatives also explained how baby boomers from around the world including those from New Zealand, Australia, Germany and Korea all had more money and time to travel than younger people.

Travel experts also found that faced between the choice of a holiday and electronic equipment members of Generation Y were happier to spend time and money on home entertainment.

The outlook for the future of travel is that foreign trips to far flung destinations that were once the preserve of younger travellers will be increasingly taken over by those in their 50s and over, who after raising a family now find they have greater wealth and time to spare.
