Chianti and frogs
05 May 2006
The Tuscan town of Asciano each has a festival that many would assume should be in France - La Sagra della Ranocchia or the Festival of Frogs.
The festival traditionally takes place in the first week of June - this year falling on 3 June - and frogs are celebrated with music, dance and food.
The main reason for honouring the amphibians is their contributions to the cuisine of the area and frog dishes dominate the menu at the town feast.
Asciano, a short drive from Siena, is a typical Tuscan hilltop town with many mediaeval buildings including the 11th century Saint Agata church and the town walls, which still stand.
The village's museums exhibit works of art from the 14th century and archaeological excavations that show remains of Roman baths and mosaic floors.
Visiting Tuscany in June also brings the chance to enjoy a product of the region that more people will enjoy.
On 28 May and 4 June, the town of Montespertoli holds the Chianti Wine Festival.
The festival has been running for nearly 50 years and wine lovers from around Europe come to the town's main square to enjoy the best wines the region has to offer.
