Danube to burst with festivities
05 May 2006

June sees the Danube in Budapest come alive with celebrations.

The month starts with the Danube Carnival.

The carnival, 9 to 18 June, is in its 49th year and consists of music and dance along the banks of the river with a mixture of traditional Magyar folk performances and classical music and rock concerts.

Budapest's Chain Bridge is celebrated on 17 June when it becomes the centre of a party aimed to highlight one of the city's most famous landmarks.

Later in the month, celebrations move to the streets. The Budapest Farewell Parade, on 24 and 25 June, marks the day the last Russian soldier left the city and the Soviet withdrawal was complete.

The parade involves fancy dress competitions, masquerade parades and a street ball.

June also sees a number of music concerts taking place in the city, with the highlight being the Palace Garden Evenings in the gardens of the Petofi Literary Museum, with its programme of jazz, classical, dance and folk performances.
