Juvenile Wroclaw
09 May 2006

Each year the students of Wroclaw finish the academic year by going a little silly.

The Juvenalia festival this year 8 to 14 June is more than just a rag week, as music and parties take over the town.

Along with Poland's biggest bands, the Animals from the UK will be playing, but the fun that takes place on the street is the biggest attraction.

Students head out to the city in costumes and parade through the town centre and the city's nightclubs and pubs lay on special entertainment.

The city of Wroclaw has a varied history that has seen it come under control of almost every major European power.

Throughout history the city has been known as Wrotizla, Wretslaw, Presslaw and Breslau, being under Austrian, German, Bohemian, Prussian and Polish control.

This history has had an affect on the city's architecture, meaning its main square and town hall have a German feel.

Wroclaw is also known as the Venice of Poland as the river Odra snakes its way around the centre meaning the city's riverside walks seem longer than they should.

The Panorama of the Battle of Raclawice is one of Wroclaw's best attractions. The panorama is a circle of painting from the 19th century that takes visitors to the battlefields of Raclawice when Polish insurrectionist forces in part armed only with scythes - took on and defeated the Russian army in 1794.
