09 May 2006

Twelve million people flew from BAA airports this April, an increase 7.8%.

The number of people flying to all regions of the world increased - most notably to European destinations where passenger numbers were up 11%.

The increase in the number of people jetting of in April was partly due to the late timing of Easter and March and April figures together show 3.2% more passengers.

Flights within the UK saw a decline in passenger numbers the only area that did as people used the long Easter weekend and school holidays to head a little further.

Over 5m people headed to Europe, 0.5m to Ireland and 1.5m to Canada and the US.

The biggest growth in April was at Stansted Airport - where 16.2% more people flew -followed by Gatwick and Aberdeen.
