Government holds off Heathrow night flights
09 May 2006
Hopes that more flights could head out of Heathrow have been dashed by the government holding back on extending night-flights.
Current limits will not be extended at least until 2012.
Transport Minister Derek Twigg told Parliament: "We have been considering the responses to the consultation on night flying restrictions at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports and will announce our final conclusions by the end of the month.
"However, in order to remove uncertainty on an element which has given rise to concerns, I have decided not to increase night-time movement limits at Heathrow during the period 2006-2012."
It had been thought that more flights would be allowed but only with quieter planes.
Residents around the airport also received good news this week as a British Airways study shows air quality at Heathrow is within European Union limits.
The study shows nitrogen dioxide levels in five out of eight locations were safe with high levels only being reported near a taxi rank, the M4 and inside the perimeter fence.
