Messing about in the fjords
09 May 2006

Each summer visitors head to the Norwegian village of Skudeneshavn to look out at the sea.

From 29 June to 2 July the town and its port are home to the Skudefestival, a boating festival.

Wooden traditionally-made boats line up with more modern yachts as the town and many visitors celebrate its maritime culture.

While craftsman show off traditional boat-making skills, artists create a more modern vision of the sea.

The village square hosts a market with traditional goods, food and the festival wine all on sale and a special newspaper is printed to help visitors keep up to date with the musical and cultural events going on.

Skudeneshavn claims to be one of the best preserved villages in Europe and its many white cottages and sea houses date back to the 19th century, creating a picturesque backdrop to the festivities.

The village organises tours, which can be useful as the narrow winding streets are easy to get lost in.

There is also the opportunity to head out in the North Atlantic and view the area's fjords and coastline.
