Far East climbs short break poll
12 May 2006
The Far East is becoming an increasingly popular destination for Brits looking for a short break, according to new figures.
Research by Lastminute.com indicates that far-eastern cities are not far behind New York, Dubai and Las Vegas when it comes to the most popular long-haul destinations for short breaks.
Bangkok was in fourth place of the survey, with Hong Kong in ninth and with an overall 35% rise in the number of long-haul breaks so far this year, many more of us could be coming home with tales of the Far East.
'Hopping over the pond to the US for a few days or heading to Dubai is now seen as pretty mainstream in the UK, and we are seeing increasing demand for more unusual destinations with the likes of Hong Kong proving extremely popular,' said Lastminute.com's John Bevan.
He added that traditional destinations such as Paris and Rome have become so accessible and familiar that they are less of a draw than ten years ago.
Demand for the Far East is thought to have been spurred on by people who have previously passed through Hong Kong and Bangkok on the way to New Zealand and Australia.
Mr Bevan added that the 2008 Olympics in Beijing could well widen the appeal of the city.
