National celebrations for Norway
12 May 2006

National Norwegian Day is fast approaching and should be as boisterous and fun-packed as ever.

The May 17th event sees hundreds of thousands of Norwegians parade through the streets of towns and cities throughout the country.

The largest event takes place in the country's capital, Oslo, but wherever you go you can be sure to find a large number of locals displaying their patriotism.

Brass brands, singing, dancing and much flag waving should be expected as well as a variety of parades such as the barnetog, involving the local children. Many of those both parading and watching deck themselves out in the traditional and beautiful regional costumes, which are a sight in themselves.

Many towns also run a number of games, shows and competitions, although these are sometimes curtailed due to the fickle Norwegian weather.

Be sure to watch out for the 17 and 18-year-old students in their final year of schooling whose good-natured pranks are also an integral part of the festivities.
