Horse fans flocking to Spain
12 May 2006

Thousands of horse fanatics will be flocking to Jerez in Spain this weekend for its famous horsefair.

The event, which has been going on all week, culminates this weekend in the equine ballet, the Los Caballos Andaluces show, performed by Jerez's royal school of equestrian art.

The festival attracts thousands of visitors each year, drawn by the wonderful displays of horsemanship performed on the city's streets with the help of Spanish purebreds and the local Andalusian thoroughbreds.

Many of the locals love to dress up in traditional English polo-playing gear for the festival, so don't be surprised if you feel like you've stepped off the plane and arrived in Windsor.

Besides the equine events, the week also offers flamenco and bullfighting displays as well as the more sedate delights of an exhibition of livestock and agricultural machinery.

If the various events begin to wear you out, you could always relax with a fine glass of sherry; it is Jerez after all.
