Tighter security for Middle Eastern airports
15 May 2006

New X-ray technology from the United States is being fitted at airports in the Middle East to improve security screening.

The new SmartCheck Personnel Screening System, developed by American Science and Engineering (AS&E), uses an X-ray beam to create a clear image that is easy to interpret by airport staff.

The system will detect any concealed objects, metallic or non-metallic, hidden in clothing, while maintaining passengers' privacy using complex algorithms.

Much faster than traditional pat-down searches, the safe screening system can be fitted into standard doorways and produces an outline of a person's body, AME Info reports.

The new technology, which will be used to identify weapons, drugs and explosives at airports in the region, will be on show at the Airport Build & Supply Exhibition in Dubai between 5th and 7th June 2006.

AS&E CEO Anthony Fabiano said: 'With this system as a primary screening method there should be little need to resolve false alarms with a secondary inspection, thereby improving the efficiency of the screening process.'
