Charleston set to celebrate the Arts
16 May 2006

The town of Charleston in South Carolina is ready to welcome visitors to its Spoleto Festival this spring.

The event, which is a fantastic celebration of the arts, begins on 26 May and will run for 17 days to 11 June.

The festival, which shares its name with a similar celebration in Italy, regularly attracts over 20,000 visitors to the town, drawn in by the many displays of music, dance, theatre and opera, which this year will include Don Giovanni and Romeo et Juliette, some of which are world premieres.

Its variety of musical displays is staggering, with choral works to chamber and symphonic pieces gracing the event during the two and a half weeks.

The majority of the town's old colonial buildings remain intact, meaning those with a passion for US history or merely fans of Gone With The Wind will have something extra to enjoy.

Many of the events take place in the late evening, helping to promote a unique and convivial atmosphere for all to experience.
