Spacey acts in Ruhr
19 May 2006

Kevin Spacey opened this year's Ruhr festival last week in Shakespeare's Richard II.

The production that debuted at London's Old Vic raised the curtain at the 60th anniversary festival in the city of Recklinghausen, which runs this year until 11 June.

The Ruhr festival is one of the world's longest running theatre festivals and alongside the major performances this year dominated by works by Shakespeare and Beckett the fringe festival offers productions from more avant-garde companies.

Performances range from children's theatre to modern dance and the festival transforms the small town of Recklinghausen, which lies halfway between the cities of Munster and Dusseldorf.

The culture continues in the area over summer with Dusseldorf's Quadriennale 06 festival.

Quadriennale 06 started in February but continues until October with all the city's major museums uniting in a £3.5m project to present exhibitions on the theme of the body.

Works by Caravaggio, Francis Bacon and the German Zero movement form a major slice of the exhibition, but over 50 other exhibitions are lined up throughout the year.
