Hollywood heads to Cannes
19 May 2006
Hollywood's elite have made their annual pilgrimage to the south of France for the Cannes film festival.
The festival started on 17 May with the world premiere of The Da Vinci Code and continues until 28 May.
The cast of the film, featuring Tom Hanks, Jean Reno, Ian McKellen and Audrey Tautou, were joined by the author of the book behind the film, Dan Brown, as they travelled from London to Cannes.
Other stars that have made their way to Mediterranean have include Sidney Poitier, Nick Nolte, Juliette Binoche and Samuel L Jackson.
Over the last 58 years the festival has helped to make Cannes world famous, although many shy away from the resort after the film community has moved on.
The town's main attraction is the sea, with sailing a popular pastime for visitors and locals and the harbour welcoming boats of all sizes.
The Hollywood glitz stays for most of the year, but by heading to Le Suquet -the old town to the west of Cannes visitors can find a number of cheaper and more traditional restaurants.
The surrounding countryside also offers chateaux, vineyards and more typical French experiences, a world away from the cameras and stars.
