Holland celebrates Holland
22 May 2006

Throughout June Amsterdam will be celebrating its culture with the Holland festival.

The Netherlands' largest performing arts festival includes film, dance, opera and theatre at 14 venues across the Dutch capital from 2 to 25 June.

Performances taking place include an Iranian theatre production, an opera adaptation of a Japanese film and dance performances put to electronic music.

Cult British director Peter Greenaway will be using his theatrical experience to bring Rembrandt's The Nightwatch alive at the Rijksmuseum.

He has created a performance around the painting with music and light highlighting parts of the work and telling the story of a familiar piece in a novel way.

Michel van der Aa, one of the Netherlands' most successful composers, has taken on the Japanese film After Life set between heaven and earth - and turned it into an opera.

In total the 23-day festival will include over 90 performances and the large number of multimedia projects taking place will allow visitors to find a wide range of cultural activities on offer.
