2m expected to head abroad over bank holiday
25 May 2006
This May Bank Holiday could see 2.1m people heading abroad.
The estimates from Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) put the figure so high because the bank holiday coincides with half term holidays and many families are expected to head abroad.
The best-selling short-haul destinations are Spain, the Canary and Balearic Islands and Portugal and trips to Egypt and North Africa are at record levels.
ABTA President Justin Fleming said: 'The last few weeks terrible weather has given an even greater incentive to people to head abroad this weekend where they are guaranteed good weather and the first taste of a proper summer.'
Top destinations for city breaks have been Barcelona, Paris, Dublin and Amsterdam, although Prague, Tallinn and Krakow have shown good growth.
High numbers of people will be heading to the US as the dollar falls, with Florida and New York being the most popular destinations, and 600,000 people are expected to cross the English Channel and head to France, Holland, Belgium and Spain.
