Third largest waterfall in the world discovered in Peru

The recently-discovered third largest waterfall in the world in Peru is to be opened up to tourists.
The waterfall - named Gocta - is nearly 2,529 feet in height and is situated near the city of Chachapoyas in the Amazonas region of Peru.
Gocta was discovered by a German explorer Stefan Ziemendorff during a trip into the rain forests in 2002, although its existence was only made public in March this year.
The falls were known to locals, but they were kept a secret for fear of ancient legends and myths of a siren and a serpent that protected the area.
Gocta will be opened fully to tourists in 2007, after accommodation and facilities have been developed in nearby villages and road access is improved.
The delay in opening up the falls has come as Peruvian authorities aim to create sustainable development in the area and educate local villagers about the importance of conserving the natural environment.
The Gocta Waterfall is only beaten in size by Angel Falls in Venezuela and Tugela Falls in South Africa.
