Finns make saunas competitive
07 June 2006

Scandinavia is famed for its saunas, but in Finland the relaxing has taken a competitive turn.

The Finnish town of Heinola holds the annual Sauna Bathing World Championships on 4 and 5 August to let sauna-lovers show off how much of the steam they can endure.

The championship brings competitors from around the world to take part and show off their stamina.

Those taking part demonstrate how well they can deal with the heat by trying to sit as straight as possible as slouching sees them disqualified while the temperature is slowly increased.

Heinola lies in the south of Finland near the forests of the country's lake district and a short drive from the Baltic Sea.

Being in the south of Finland, Heinola does not experience the midnight sun in summer, although the nights are short and not completely dark, but under twilight. In the north of the country the midnight sun lasts until 27 July.
