Downhill alpine driving
12 June 2006

Daring or daft, the Mont-Dore Car Race sees drivers racing down the side of a mountain breaking the usual peace and quiet of the Massif Central.

The event takes place 5 to 7 August at the spa town of Mont-Dore in the centre of France near Puy de Sancy the highest peak in the area.

The aim of the race is relatively simple to drive down the mountain as fast as possible along the 5km-course that drops 300 metres.

Qualifying will take place on the opening day - with around 300 entrants attempting to show off their skills - followed by practice sessions and the big race on the final day.

After the action of the race the town's spas which dates back to Roman times offer the perfect quiet relaxation.

The woods of the nearby mountains and the town's park beside the Dordogne also provide calm away from the roars of the engines.
