Death of a saint
13 June 2006

Each year the small Italian town of Bolsena recreates the death of a young girl.

On the eastern banks of the volcanic Lake Bolsena, the town commemorates the death of the 3rd century martyr Cristina with a series of silent dramatic reconstructions.

The 12-year-old Cristina converted to Christianity, despite the opposition of her father, and he disagreed so vehemently that he had her tortured to death.

However, the accounts of her life tell how god intervened on several occasions, and it is these occasions that are recreated by Bolsena.

Hundreds of actors are involved in recreating the silent scenes at ten stages throughout the town on 23 and 24 July.

The oval-shaped Lake Bolsena lies around 80km north of Rome and south of Perugia and while being just 40km from the sea.

Being near the regions of Umbria and Tuscany the lake brings many visitors to its shores with one main attraction being Bisentina, one of the islands within the lake, which was once a prison for clergy found guilty of heresy.
