Honey jams airport
13 June 2006

Florida's Tallahassee Airport was forced to close and be evacuated for three hours this week because of a jar of honey.

The alert arose on Monday (12 June) after a food critic with a bag of local fare was stopped as his bag was x-rayed at the passenger gate.

Quinten Johnson, the local transportation safety administration director, explained staff took the decision to close the airport because the combination of electronic equipment (the journalist's digital recorder) and organic materials (the honey, some oyster shells and barbeque spices) resembled a bomb.

The bag was removed from the airport by a robot, while 470 passengers were evacuated.

The food critic, Todd Coleman, was held for four hours while the airport swiftly re-opened.

Mr Coleman said after the sticky mess: 'I was here for the weekend doing a story on food in Apalachicola.

'I was afraid they were going to blow my bag up. It would have blown my story up.'
