New Algarve tourist card
19 June 2006

Visitors to the Algarve will soon be able to enter major tourist attractions simply by swiping a card.

This will be made possible with the introduction of the Algarve Card at the end of the summer that could revolutionise the way that tourists book hotel rooms and purchase tickets for theme parks and museums.

Tourists will be able to pay for their chosen events and services at tourism information offices where the details will be programmed into the Algarve Card.

This card can then be swiped at the theme park, hotel or museum allowing the visitor to enter without sorting out finances on the day, reports the Algarve edition of the Resident.

It is thought that a small percentage of each payment will go to the Algarve Tourist Board which it is hoped will allow for further investment that will improve the experiences of tourists in the region.

The Algarve Tourist Board is actually expecting a rise in the number of tourists heading to the area of around 3.5% to 4.5% this summer.

The Resident suggests that the number of Dutch tourists heading to the Algarve has increased by 25% in the last few years, while there has also been a significant rise in the number of Brits taking holidays in the area often described as the garden of Portugal.
