Heathrow brings in baggage restrictions
21 June 2006

Passengers heading through Heathrow are set to face a reduction in the size of their hand luggage.

The restrictions that follow International Air Transport Association standards state the hand luggage must be no more than 56cm long, 45cm wide and 25cm deep.

Liz Neighbour, of BAA, told the Guardian: 'Passengers are now packing larger, thicker hand baggage filled with more electronic devices then ever before.

'This trend demands extra security attention leading to longer queues. It's time for the journey of the over-stuffed "wheelie bag" to end at check-in.'

Any baggage that is over the limit will be treated as hold luggage.

It is hoped the new restrictions being introduced from 5 July will speed up airport security checks.
