Antwerp's goat parade
27 June 2006

The goats come out to play in Antwerp this August for the annual goat parade.

The city's district of Wilrijk is also known as the Goat Village and it earns its name with the Belgian Kids Championship, a goat market and the parade of goats, where the nation's greatest caprine specimens are put on show, on 6 August.

With the animals not holding the attention of all visitors, Wilrijk also uses the day to hold a vintage car rally and a painting competition, where the subjects of the masterpieces need not be goats.

The centre of Antwerp will also be worth visiting on 6 August, as the day has been named a car-less day, with the city centre seeming much quieter with the noise of engines replaced by bleating.

The city's main market square also holds the Antwerp Guild Festival over the same weekend, with the grand 19th century guild houses that surround the square opening their doors to visitors.
