Mongolia tipped as new destination
29 June 2006

Mongolia could become a new destination for tourists around the world, the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has claimed.

During a visit to the country UNWTO Secretary-General Francesco Frangialli noted the improvement made to infrastructure and the tourism sector over the last three years.

He said: 'Mongolia has great potential to be a new emerging destination for niche markets in the fields of ecotourism, adventure tourism, sport and cultural tourism, based on its unique culture and natural beauty.'

Last year, 338,000 tourists visited Mongolia an increase of 15% on 2004 and numbers are expected to rise further this year as the country is celebrating the 800th Anniversary of Great Mongolian State.

Throughout Mongolia events will be taking place to celebrate the anniversary of the foundation of Mongolia and the bringing together of all Mongol tribe under Genghis Khan in 1206, featuring art exhibitions, concerts and a horse relay across the country.
