China to lift Tibet travel restrictions

Restrictions imposed by China on travellers to Tibet are to be eased from next month, according to press reports.
The Deutsche Presse agency said today that the Beijing government is to ease its requirement for tourists to have special permits to enter the Himalayan region.
The agency reported from Lhasa that existing travel restrictions on foreign tourists in Tibet are to be waived.
The vice chairman of Tibet's regional government, Wu Jilie, told Deutsche Presse that the region was being made more accessible to tourists and that as one of China's poorest regions it had a real need for greater tourist income.
As part of the plans Beijing is pumping investment into infrastructure in Tibet, with an improved rail link between Lhasa and Beijing, as well as better links to India, Nepal and the west of the country.
Critics of the projects fear that China's real motivation is to speed the mass migration of Han Chinese settlers into Tibet.
