Himalayan town named top spa destination
13 September 2006
The top spa destination in the world has been named as Ananda Spa in the Himalayas.
The luxurious Indian hilltop retreat combines the ancient Indian practice of Ayurveda with contemporary western spa options, to provide a holistic approach for visitors.
The world class spa used to be the residence of the Maharaja of Tehri-Garhwal and now offers an array of opportunities for travellers to restore their energies.
The Conde Nast Traveller Readers Travel Awards 2006 voted the Ananda the Best Overseas Spa Retreat and India has been named as the fourth most preferred holiday destination. The Ananda has also won praise from top publications such as Harpers Bazaar, the New York Times and the International Herald Tribune.
Located 260km from New Delhi, in northern India, the 21,000sq ft spa provides around 80 body and beauty treatments and attempts to 'achieve the ultimate harmony between the physical and the mental realms of the individual', the website declares.
The Ananda Spa has a total of 70 deluxe rooms and five suites offering views of the river Ganges, the town of Rishikesh or the Palace, excellent healthy cuisine at its restaurant and outdoor adventure activities.
The Serano Spa located at Park Hyatt Goa Resort and Spa was also named in the top ten overseas spa reports by Conde Nast and the Oberoi Rajvilas, in Jaipur, was named the fifth most preferred overseas leisure hotel in Asia and the Indian sub continent, the Hindustan Times reports.
The Asian spa market is proving increasingly popular with global travellers, as traditional Indian arts such as yoga and Ayurveda are combined with modern spa practices and world class luxury.
