Finland named as must see destination
13 December 2006

Finland has been named as one of the top ten countries to visit during 2007 by a leading travel publisher.

The Lonely Planet has released its Blue List: The Best in Travel 2007, with Finland featuring high up the standings.

The Mammut Snow Hotel in Kemi, northern Finland, was also given special recognition by being named as the most eccentric place to stay in the world.

Finland is lauded as "cool" and a "breath of fresh air" and the Lonely Planet has compiled a guide of the seven life-changing experiences that people should enjoy during a visit to the country.

Among them are taking a snowmobile safari, staying in a lakeside cottage and enjoying a trip on a sleigh pulled by reindeer or huskies.

One of the most attractive features of a holiday in Finland is the aurora borealis, or Northern Lights, with displays visible in some parts of the country hundreds of times a year.

'Finland is a unique destination, with many hidden gems,' said Finland's Tourist Board director Anne Lind.

'More experienced travellers are now discovering the magic wonders of Finland, its unspoiled environment, stunning landscapes and fantastic diversity.'
