New York's new taxis
18 December 2006
New York taxis are set to get a makeover, with in-car entertainment, new payment systems and tracking devices all making an appearance.
Travellers in the Big Apple will be able to benefit from a number of new innovations which are designed to improve the passengers' experience.
TV sets are to be introduced, offering entertainment and a handy tracking device, complete with electronic map.
The touch screens will also offer travellers the chance to look at restaurant reviews, check the news and access weather reports.
Perhaps the most useful feature of the new taxis is a credit card reader, meaning holidaymakers can pay for their journey by card rather than dealing with changing money before getting into a cab.
Locating lost property should also become easier with the new models, with a central telephone number being set up and the need to remember the taxi's medallion number no longer necessary.
New York's Taxi and Limousine Commission says that it hopes the new taxis will be hitting the city's streets from as early as January 2007.
