Wild Dogs back in Maasai Mara
20 December 2006

The endangered African Wild Dog has been spotted in Kenya, delighting guides and locals at the Maasai Mara Reserve.

Philip Keter, a highly-trained guide, said that he spotted and photographed the three dogs, confirming the continuation of one of the most endangered species in Africa.

'I spotted swaying white tails and thought they were impala. The figures were definitely blackish and I could not believe my eyes. Wow! Wild Dogs?' he told the Kenya Tourist Board.

Kenya has many wild and wonderful animals to see, but the African Wild Dog also known as painted wolves or Cape Hunting Dog is a rare treat.

Roaming in packs, these animals are one of the swiftest and most skilled hunters in the continent.

However, loss of habitat and domestic dog diseases have reduced their numbers, making such sightings a rarity.

Yet for those like Mr Keter and his clients, the glimpse was a 'truly magical encounter', which offers hope that the wild dogs may join Kenya's other animal attractions in becoming a tourist draw.
