Go to Goa to gamble
21 December 2006

Goa could soon become the gambling capital of India, with plans to bring the popular holiday destination on a par with Las Vegas.

State officials have agreed in principle to allow five floating casinos to be launched in the region.

It comes almost ten years since the first water-based casino was opened and it appears that public support for the new casinos is strong.

'We are receiving an immense response for opening new casinos and the cabinet decided to increase the annual fees,' a senior official told Business Standard.

As well as the one floating casino, Goa also has eight land-based sites, all of which are in five-star hotels.

Officials say that ten casino proposals were accepted, but only five licences are being granted following criticism from some parties.
