Baby passed through x-ray machine
21 December 2006
An inexperienced traveller caused panic at an American airport when she put her baby grandson through the x-ray machine.
The unnamed women placed the one-month-old child on the conveyor belt and waited patiently for him to pass through.
A security worker at Los Angeles International airport noticed the child's shape on the baggage screening monitor and quickly pulled him out.
Concerned that the baby may have been damaged by the experience, the grandmother and airport officials rushed him to hospital.
Tests concluded that he had not received a dangerous does of radiation and he was soon released.
'This was an innocent mistake by an obviously inexperienced traveller,' said airport spokesman Paul Haney.
Mr Haney also revealed that a similar incident occurred in 1988, when a child in a car seat was put through the machine.
