Trying to get a zoo through customs
10 January 2007

A man has been arrested after trying to smuggle a large number of animals through customs in Hong Kong.

The man was apprehended after a crocodile was found in his bag. Upon closer inspection, authorities found that it was in fact an endangered species and searched the rest of his luggage.

Staff at the airport were left shocked and appalled by what they found, which included six snakes, 11 flying squirrels and 46 turtles and tortoises.

The unnamed man had been trying to get the animals from Thailand to China when he was stopped.

Officials in Hong Kong are working hard to put a stop to the illegal movement of animals between countries and acted quickly to punish the man.

One day after his arrest, the man was fined HK$16,000 (£1,060) and given a six month suspended sentence.
