Malta prepares for carnival

The Mediterranean island of Malta is preparing for the annual carnival which is due to take place next month.

Valletta, the country's capital city, will play host to the festival which has been taking place since the 1440s.

The idea behind the festival is to indulge and feast before the 40 days of lent and the fun begins on 16 February.

Colourful floats, elaborate costumes and hundreds of dancers are the order of the day throughout carnival and the fun continues into the night.

All of the local bars and clubs are packed with partygoers, many of whom remain in fancy dress, making for an interesting evening.

Carnival lasts for five days, starting on 16 February and coming to an end on 20 February.
