Flying got safer in 2006

The latest figures show that air travel is getting safer, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Data from 2006 demonstrates that last year was the safest ever for commercial air travel.
The hull loss rate, which counts the number of incidences where a plane is destroyed or rendered irreplaceable, was just 0.65 accidents per million flights.
That is an extremely healthy rate and signals the continuation of a steady decline in the hull loss rate since the 1.32 per million it stood at in 1996.
In addition, onboard safety procedures appear to be having an impact, with the number of fatalities also falling significantly.
Despite the positive figures for 2006, the IATA says some areas of the world need to improve standards.
Former Soviet republics for instance, saw a hull loss rate of 8.6 per million.
