Antigua and Barbuda has been named Best Beach Destination at the Luxury Travel Readers Awards.

The twin island nation took top spot in the competition, which recognises excellence across the world.

A lavish ceremony was held in Hammersmith, London on 12 January, with Antigua and Barbuda's high commissioner receiving the award in front of hundreds of industry professionals.

'We are proud and delighted to receive this award which recognises the beauty of our islands' beaches,' said the honourable Dr Carl Roberts upon accepting the award.

'With 365 beaches, one for every day of the year, we can offer something to suit every visitor's wish. Our commitment to keeping our beaches unspoilt stands us in good stead for many years to come.'

The nation has no intention of dwelling on its victory however, with the Antigua and Barbuda Tourist Office revealing its plans for the future.

'We are actively targeting the family market for this summer and with so many of our beaches being in sheltered coves this makes it an ideal holiday destination for young children,' said Carol Hay.

Ms Hay went on to point out that the islands are fast becoming a popular destination for honeymoons and weddings.
