The Lennon effect
26 January 2007
Authorities and locals in a remote Scottish village are bracing themselves for a huge influx of visitors.
It is after pictures of John Lennon enjoying a holiday in Durness were published on the North Highland Tourism Operator's (NHT's) website.
Initially, the NHT had hoped that the photographs of Lennon, along with wife Yoko Ono and their children, would give the region a small boost in tourism.
However, if hits on the website are anything to go by, Durness could be about to experience a massive influx of visitors.
The site usually attracts around 3,000 visitors a day, but since the photographs have been posted on it, that number has rocketed to over 150,000.
'We are absolutely delighted by the response and hope that many of the web visitors actually come to the north Highlands and see why it inspired and touched John Lennon in such a profound way,' said Durrant Macleod from NHT.
It is thought that many fans will be keen to learn a little more about their idol's personal life by visiting Durness.
