Valencia's Las Fallas
02 February 2007

Valencia will soon be awash with colour, noise and people as the city's biggest festival kicks off.

Las Fallas is a huge event, attracting around 2m every year, and is certainly one of the loudest festivals around.

Throughout the week fires, explosions and fantastic parades are witnessed, while the entire city is decorated with huge papier mache figures.

It is these large-scale models, usually based on the famous and fictional, that are burned at the end of the celebrations.

In order to stick with the celebratory theme, the effigies are not merely set alight, but are stuffed with fireworks which are then set off.

People taking a holiday in Valencia during Las Fallas may find it hard to grab a few minutes peace, as fireworks and explosions are a constant companion - even during the day.

Every day during Las Fallas, a competition is held to see which neighbourhood can create the loudest explosion.

The festival is held every year and the local authorities have become extremely adept at keeping things safe and secure, making Las Fallas one of the best festivals in Europe.

The event begins on 10 March and comes to an end on 19 March.
