Dracula's castle up for sale
07 February 2007

Holidaymakers in Romania may soon be able to visit one of the country's most famous buildings.

Bran Castle has been privately owned for many years, but now Brasov County Council is bidding for the right to own it.

The building is likely to set the council back around £40m, but officials are sure that it will be a worthy investment as it has had a very special previous owner.

Built in 1212 by Teutonic knights, the structure is better-known as Dracula's Castle.

It was briefly used as a home for Vlad the Impaler, who led a bloody rule of Romania during the 15th century.

Vlad is also frequently referred to as Vlad Dracula and he is said to have been the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula novels.

Bram Castle is steeped in history and has a certain hold over almost everyone who has seen it, which is part of the reason why Brasov County Council wants to purchase it.

'We want to get involved in getting back the castle and running it because it would be a very good opportunity to further develop tourism,' said Aristotel Cancescu, president of the town.
