The Hokitika Wildfoods Festival
20 February 2007

Thousands of people will descend on New Zealand for the Hokitika Wildfoods Festival in March.

The event is famous the world over as it focuses on the eating of weird and wonderful foods, which roughly translates as insects and the animal parts which do not normally make it onto supermarket shelves.

More than 20,000 people are expected to attend this year's event on 10 March, with the hope of tasting exotic delicacies such as slugs, sheep's eyes and bulls' penises.

Hokitika Wildfoods Festival is not just about eating strange things, it also celebrates the lifestyle of the coastal town.

Indeed, the festival itself is merely a large celebration of the wacky, fun-loving way that the town's population like to live their lives.

Other events include a dance in the main marquee as well as live music which is provided by local talent.

Much of the food which is available to taste is sourced locally and prepared by local restaurants and groups.
