'Blast off' at Kennedy Space Centre
22 February 2007

Space travel is fast becoming a hot topic in the world today with firms like Virgin Atlantic putting plans in place to take tourists out of the earth's atmosphere.

However, the reality may not be with us for some years yet and the price of a ticket is likely to be as astronomical as the flight itself.

This does not mean that holidaymakers cannot experience the thrill of flying in a spacecraft however, as Nasa's Kennedy Space Centre Visitor Complex has announced the opening of a new attraction.

From 25 May travellers will be able to sample the sights, sounds and feelings of blasting off and orbiting the planet.

Nasa has spent $60m (£30.7m) on the Shuttle Launch Experience simulation and it is hoped that the attraction will capture the imagination of budding astronauts.

'Shuttle Launch Experience will forge a lasting impression for everyone, especially those who have ever imagined the adventure of space travel,' said Daniel LeBlanc, chief operating officer of Kennedy Space Centre Visitor Complex.

Experts have been working on the project for three years and uses state of the art technology to give a realistic simulation of space travel.
