Steve Irwin's zoo to be expanded
23 February 2007

An Australian zoo which was made famous by the late Steve Irwin is to be expanded.

Government officials have agreed to hand over some land to the zoo so that it can grow, with the intention of making it a major tourist attraction.

Australia Zoo will now feature a safari experience, with a wide range of wildlife from different parts of the world on display.

It is said that both Steve and his wife Terri had always dreamed of developing the site into a top tourist destination and now that ambition is set to become a reality.

'There are a number of processes which Australia Zoo must implement to realise its dream but the agreement on forestry land which it has reached with the government brings expansion one step closer,' a spokeswoman for the zoo told the Australian Associated Press.

Australia Zoo was a popular tourist destination prior to Steve Irwin's death in September 2006.

However, following the sudden and tragic circumstances in which he lost his life, the zoo has become better known globally.
