Boarding passes on mobile phones
23 February 2007
The way passengers board aircraft could be revolutionised with the advent of pioneering new technology.
RT-MobiTicket is a new product which will allow travellers to download their boarding pass onto a mobile phone or personal digital assistant (PDA).
Created in conjunction by Real Time Engineering and Mobiga, the technology sends a barcode to the passenger, who then allows a scanner to read it.
The bar code contains all of the passenger's boarding details and the scanners that read them are the same ones that read 'print at home' boarding passes.
RT-MobiTicket's makers say that this means people will be able to check in over the internet, much the same way that they can now, only there will be no need to print out a pass.
'The launch of RT-MobiTicket ensures that passengers always have their boarding passes available,' commented Real Time Engineering's technology manager, Alastair Deacon.
'RT-MobiTicket also provides airlines with opportunities to enhance the passenger service through mobile updates, or to generate additional revenue from premium check-in services.'
The firms behind the technology say that it can be easily integrated into any airline's online check-in service.
