A new piece of equipment is being tested in America with the promise that it will change security procedures at airports around the world.

X-ray equipment is used on passengers' bodies, revealing any potentially dangerous items that might usually go undetected.

A 90-day trial is taking place at Sky Harbour International airport in Phoenix, although at present it is only being used on a voluntary basis.

The Transportation Security Administration has assured passengers that every effort has been made to ensure that the process is not too invasive.

The system displays the images in a way that is not inappropriate and once a passenger has passed through the system, the image will be deleted and is not stored anywhere.

Security officials sit in a separate room where they analyse the images and inform the passenger whether they may continue with their journey or not through the illumination of a green or red light.

Sky Harbour International is hoping that the trial proves successful, meaning it may be extended.
